Where History Meets Modern Mooring

Nestled along the picturesque Grand Union Canal, Bridgewater Boats has deep roots in the rich history of British canals.
During the 18th century through the mid-20th century, canals were the lifelines of Britain, serving as the primary roads for efficient transportation of goods.

Early Canal Transport

Horses were the workhorses of this era, perfectly suited to pull narrow boats, capable of moving up to 50 times more cargo by water than by cart. The bridges that spanned these waterways were meticulously designed to accommodate these equine partners as they walked the towpath beneath. This legacy of canal transport continued steadfastly until the 1960s when it remained a reliable form of transportation, echoing the industrious spirit of the time.

How Bridgewater Started

In the early 1970s, the Bridgewater Boats mooring site came into existence, born from the excavation of gravel. Located on the Grand Union Canal, our Watford-based site not only offers a tranquil escape but also provides easy access to transport options connecting you to the vibrant city of London. We’re proud to be part of the continuing history of this waterway, offering secure mooring services for both narrow boats and wide beam boats.

Bridgewater Today

Bridgewater Boats is not just a mooring site; it’s a living testament to the enduring legacy of British canals, their vital role in history, and the evolving spirit of those who continue to navigate these historic waterways. We look forward to welcoming you to Bridgewater Boats, where history and modern convenience converge along the Grand Union Canal.
